If you are running X you can use seyon an X based communication
package. I hope that is "from-ref" over at agate.berkeley.edu
if not then is not too difficult to compile for 386bsd.

Also, long, long time ago we ported kermit, look around in
agate.berkeley.edu:/pub/386BSD/386bsd-0.1/unofficial/from-ref it
might be there.
