                                NEWS FLASH
                                ----------
This is not a regular QIC NEW item. What follows
is information pertaining to the legal implications with
the use of UNIX as an operation system.

                Today, Tuesday 04-27-1993, between 5:30pm and 6:30pm
at the Xerox PARC auditorium in Palo Alto, California, USA,
a panel discussion was held about "Computing at Livermore 1963".
Among the speakers was Mr. Norman Hardy.

Mr. Hardy, a system programer, was speaking about, the
efforts he and others had made at LLNL (Lawrence Livermore National
Laboratory). While speaking he said, to this nature:

I should note at that time, mid-1964, we had the ability to run
        a fork process.

These are not his exact words. Mr. Hardy used words with
great precision, speaking slowly and clearly in a regular tone.
His comments were video taped by Mr. Seth Restino for use on
the local cable access channel in Palo Alto.

As some of you are aware, there have been accusations that
the current BSD source has source code that is copyright by
USL (Unix System Laboratories). These statements by Mr. Hardy point,
in some light, with good possibilities that USL is incorrect in it's
        accusations in this matter.

Continuing, since I witnessed this event and I am a member
of MPAC, an all volunteer group of producers of the local channel 6,
this video will be made available to person that feel this is
information is of worth. The exact time of availability is not
determinable, since I will probably be edited for broadcast at
a later date. However, I will make available to those parities
that show good reason for it's availability in a raw unedited form.
These parties may include any who are currently in litigation
        about these circumstances.

Those considering qualifications should contact me
at the earliest possible moment. My E-mail address follows.
