I just start using X BTW...

I have a Chips & Technologies VGA card.  It only works in 64k mono
mode.  I tried setting the virtual console to larger than 800x650, and
it cried.. err... died with the same message you got.  Me thinks that
this means the video not compatable, or the virtual space is
too large.
