This is goind to sound silly but, strike a key through all the boot process
and your kbd should be alive when you get to the prompt...! 
It's a way to work around the problem.

I had (before patchkit 0.2.1) the same problem on my LP486 and to fix it in
pccons by adding  kbd_cmd(KBC_RESET) at the end of the pcattach routine.
