I too have been experiencing various tapedrive difficulties. I'm using
julian's drivers and pl0.2.[12]. To summarize:

when using an Exabyte 5150ES/Adaptec 1542B with a tape in the drive the
system hangs after probing all scsi devices in the system. It works
fine if I boot and then insert the tape.

When using a 5150ES/1742A in normal mode the system behaves as above.

An attempt to write to a qic150 tape using a 5150ES/1742A in extended
mode the system reports "write filemark failed" as Wilko reported.
It reads qic120 and qic150 tapes fine.

An archive 2120 has worked in all combinations and boots with a tape in the
drive.

Anyone have any ideas?
