This is more interesting for the bin* and src* distributions.
bin01dist, collected with tar and packed with gzip and splitted
into 240K parts now has 41 parts (original code, not with shared libs or
gcc233), src01dist has 34 parts (fully patched 0.2.2, however some
cleanups in the uucp source directory made); etc01dist wasn't worth
for repacking (out-of-date).

Maybe it is possible to strip off parts of gzip to make a gzip-lite.
