I ran into this problem when mixing distribution utilities such as
ifconfig, route, and ftp with later versions intended for the full
system.

When you are getting your system up use the distribution utilities,
after it is up then avoid them.

If that doesn't work....then rest assured that you WILL get ftp
working.  Keep at it.  :-)
