Greetings!

I am considering "upgrading" my machine from ix/386 to 386BSD
(or Linux, but I'm leaning more towards 386BSD) (the reason I'm
upgrading is that I might need SLIP and/or PPP soon, and I don't feel
like sending SunSoft tons of money for their TCP/IP package).

Before I upgrade, I have three basic questions that aren't
really answered by the FAQ list for 386BSD:

a) I noticed in the "release notes" that it says DES is not implemented.
Does that mean I cannot take encoded strings from /etc/passwd on my
System V and plunk them in /etc/passwd under 386BSD? (I have a number
of uucp logins, and I haven't kept track of the passwords for them, so
I'd need to salvage the encoded strings from /etc/passwd).

b) I have a v.32bis modem which runs pretty regularly at high speeds for
uucp and Zmodem transfers. I use it with hardware flow control in
conjunction with a NS16550A uart and the FAS driver for SVR3 Unix
to get pretty decent throughput (I have it locked at 38400 bps).
Do I need to do anything special and/or extraordinary after I've
installed 0.1 to get this to work fine/fast? (I assume that I'd
have to get to the 0.1.2.2 patchlevel?)

c) I assume 386BSD doesn't come with HDB uucp. Which uucp comes with
it? The old "L.sys" style uucp? Any surprises in that area?

Thanks in advance!

PS. I'll also need to install Cnews relatively soon, but I assume that's
not a problem. (I read in one of the c.o.3 newsgroups that someone
had done it relatively painlessly recently.)

PPS. Wish me luck ;-)
