For the fairness of the competition :-) : All three alternative 
console drivers (codrv-0.1.2-ALPHA, syscons, pcvt) have some kind of 
virtual consoles in it. They have different additional goodies, so it is
up to you to decide which one is the best for you (I wouldn't reagard this
decision as easy):
codrv: XFree86, remappable keyboard
pcvt: vt100 emulator, remappable keyboard (subset of codrv)
syscons: SYSV ioctl subset
