There is also a serious memory leak in groff 1.01. It's a C++ program, and
it was compiled with gcc 1.39.

You should get gcc-2.3.3 and groff-1.07. groff 1.07 is at alpha.gnu.ai.mit.
edu and contains all the source, objects, binaries, macros, man pages, etc.,
in a 1.9 meg gunzipped tar archive.

I obtained gcc 2.3.3 sometime ago from ref.tfs.com. Since it's gone away,
I'd expect to find it in the from-ref directory on agate.berkeley.edu.

BTW, groff 1.07 was compiled with gcc 2.3.3, and so far I haven't found
any memory leaking problems in it. The leaking was fairly serious in
groff 1.01, and I could only do a few troff sessions before the swap
space got eaten up, performance degraded seriously, and I ended up having
to reboot.
