Thanks to all who have responded with "you forget the -f option".  BUT, I
didn't!!  Here's what I tried:

tar -tvf /dev/rst0

as well as various other device incantaions.  I get the same message, except
that whatever device I specify shows as having a "bad file descriptor"...
Any other ideas?
