There have been quite a few "official" comments posted about this
(most probably in comp.windows.x.i386unix).

Work is currently in progress to add support for S3, 8514/A,
Mach8, and possibly a few other accelerated chipsets to version
2.0 of XFree86. There is still a lot to be done, and we have no
prediction of a release date (all I can say is that it won't be
before June '93).

Amancio has chosen to not be involved with the XFree86 group working
on this -- and I wouldn't want to overstate any apparent "frictions"
between him and us.

As for using the XS3 server with the XFree86 clients and libraries -- I
don't see that there should be any problems. There may however be
incompatibilities between Xconfig formats. When it comes to support,
you need to identify if the problem is in the server or clients/libs
and contact the appropriate group. If you want an X server for S3
today, then XS3 is definitely the way to go.
