I know "tin" will do the job if all you need is the nntp client.  Just
set environment variable NNTPSERVER to your nntp server and run "tin".
I am too new to 386BSD to know where to get the binaries.  I use it on
SVR3.2 on a 3B2.  Oh well, at least the Sun is on order...
