If you're running X than you can use xvnews which is an excellent gui news front end.
I think it's *MUCH* better than xrn (which I think is crap to be honest). Although it's an xview (openwindows) client, you don't need to be running olwm (xview3) to run xvnews.  Look on agate in the "from-ref"  directory for xvnews.
