 While I welcome any acclaim I can get ( :-) ) - I can't take 
credit for this driver...  I simply grabbed one someone in Japan
had put together (at the University of Tokyo.)   Here's the original
text of the message I saved, a reply to Christoph KuKulies 
(kuku@acds.physik.rwth-aachen.de) posted by Shin Yoshimura, 
(shin@nc.u-tokyo.ac.jp).  The original post was about the slow ne1000
performance.  This all transpired around August of 1992...
