I have spent over 100 man hours trying to fix this problem. I hope it
is not something simple.
root@lndead su# mdir a:
mdir: Cannot initialize 'A:'
root@lndead su# tail /var/log/messages
Mar 21 17:32:20 lndead /386bsd: fd0: hard error (ST0 40 ST1 1 ST2 0 ST3 0 cyl 0 hd 1 sec 2)
Mar 21 17:32:21 lndead /386bsd: fd0: hard error (ST0 40 ST1 1 ST2 0 ST3 0 cyl 0 hd 1 sec 2)
root@lndead su# cd mtools-2.0.7
root@lndead su# ./mdir a:
./mdir: Cannot initialize 'A:'
root@lndead su# tail /var/log/messages
Mar 21 17:34:20 lndead last message repeated 4 times

An attempt to mdir b: usually fails, but right now it succeded! The
mdir b: command usually gives the error:
Mar 21 16:26:27 lndead /386bsd: fd1: hard error (ST0 41 ST1 1 ST2 0 ST3 0 cyl
 0 hd 1 sec 2)
Mar 21 16:26:57 lndead /386bsd: fd1: hard error (ST0 41 ST1 1 ST2 0 ST3 0 cyl
 0 hd 1 sec 2)

Mdir'ing the C drive usually works.
root@lndead su# mdir c:
Volume in drive C has no label
 Directory for C:/

IO SYS 33430 3-22-91 5:10a
MSDOS SYS 37394 3-22-91 5:10a
COMMAND COM 47845 3-22-91 5:10a
(stuff deleted)
      29 File(s) 5607424 bytes free
root@lndead su# mcopy c:/command.com /tmp/command
init: open: No such file or directory

Huh?
PLEASE HELP ME - I must figure this out before I can back up!
