I think you need gcc 2.3.3 binaries with the pragma packing options built in. I had
the same problem with my 2.3.3 built kernels rebooting infinitely when compiled with
the 2.3.3 binaries I got off of ref (may it rest in peace :-(   ). When I got the
2.3.3 binaries made available by Charles Hannum on alpha.gnu.ai.mit.edu in /386bsd
I was able to build working 2.3.3 built kernels. Thanks Chuck!
