I believe it was the tar.Z option of ftpd; if I ran tar on ref.tfs.com and
then ftp'd the file the error did not occur.  It might also be a problem
with a failure of my kernel to detect bad Ethernet frames (use WD8013, had
checksum testing turned off at the time).
