Yes, if you use Julian's SCSI drivers; no otherwise.  Boot disks containing
his SCSI drivers are available for download from agate.berkeley.edu in the
unofficial directory.

Since the 1542A isn't config'ed in by default, I believe, you will have to
use a working system to build a kernel to use a drive with the controller,
ie: it must be bootstrapped using another drive.

This isn't really frequently asked, since 1542A's are very prevalent; you
get much, much better performance with 1542B's at very little additional
cost.  The 1542A's don't support a number of commands used in the default
1542B driver; this makes them ridiculously slower and means the default
driver can't be used.

I believe the INSTALL.NOTES had a section on what controllers were usable,
wherein it listed the 1542B as the only SCSI controller the unpatched,
unmodified kernel could support.
