and I have learned that, yes, the WD8003E is supported and the IRQ 9
mystery is not really a mystery.  Thanks Christoph.

I have also verified that there are no IRQ conflicts between my video
controller and ethernet controller.  I made sure that IRQ 2 was disabled
on the video controller.

I'm still getting no response to pings to remote hosts.  But when I ping
the PC from a Sun host, I get the message "reject 65531" printed on the
PC console every second or so (it seems in response to every ping
from the Sun).  Does this mean the PC is seeing packets from the Sun,
but rejecting them?  Any idea why?
