Okay, i have this same problem (& maybe more!). This particular
problem is keeping me from even installing 386bsd on my machine, but
someday I will have *nix on my machine!!
Anyway, here is my synopsis so far on this problem. Please
correct me if i'm wrong, or tell me if i'm missing anything major.

	1. If you get the "updating disks" message, and the system seems
to hang, it may come back after a while (how long?). And is the system
fine after this?

	2. If you are caught in a reboot loop, (the trap 12 type),
the system may recover itself after a few dozen reboots. And this
thing may come and go as it pleases? Do any patches fix this?

	3. Another way around the reboot loop may be to turn off the
machine for a minute, so as to let the IDE controller recover? (this
has worked for me sometimes)

Here is my problem specifically: I finally got 386bsd on the
hard disk, and i got all the bin01.* files into /tmp. Then, i ran
extract bin01. It checked all my files and said they were fine.
	And then...

	ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE!!!

I got *tons* of errors, which culminated in a message telling me
that the system was rebooting (this message happened to be in yellow on
blue, as opposed to the grey error messages i was getting before). And
it kept rebooting with the same message. This was this morning, so I
didn't have time to completely analyze the situation, but i was using
the 386bsd.nostrip.X.nokeyfix (or something like that) kernel. (the
kbd fix kernel stops my system cold)

I thought i was home free!! what happened??

 - Joel

P.S. If i ever get this damn thing to work, i'll write a major addition
to the FAQ addressing this problem! I may even rewrite the FAQ
or maybe even the install prog! That's how frustrated i am!

DON'T LET ME HAVE TO RUN LINUX!! I'VE PUT WAY TOO MUCH TIME INTO 386BSD!!
