Hello,

We are trying to get Xfree86 running under 386bsd. Our graphics
card is the ATI/Vantage, which is essentially the same as the
ATI/Ultra only with slower memory. I've caught bits and pieces
of threads regarding running Xfree86 with an ATI/Ultra, but am
not exactly sure what needs to be done. My understanding is
that we need to do as follows:

1) get a kernel that has X support compiled in.
2) install a new X server that supports the 8514 chip.

Assuming this is correct, my questions are:

1) where can I get a 386bsd kernel that includes the 0.2 patches
and has X support included? I tried the following from agate,
but the machine locks up after printing out the boot logo.
Do these kernels have the 0.2 patches included?

kernel-1.2.pccons.tar.Z - uses the stock pccons console driver
kernel-1.2.codrv.tar.Z - uses Holger Veit's enhanced console driver

2) where can I pick up the X server that supports the 8514 chip?
I've been told there is one at sunvis.rtpnc.epa.gov, but I was
sure which file was which over there.

3) Is this just a matter of replacing the binary that comes with the
xfree86 distribution with the 8514 binary, or is there more that
needs to be done.

4) do I need to make any additional changes to the Xconfig file?

For those of you who have been successful at getting Xfree86 running
under 386bsd with an ATI/Vantage or ATI/Ultra graphics adapter, we'd
be most grateful for a few pointers.

Jon
