Perhaps the cache problems involve cache coherency.

I wonder if your motherboard is not handling cache flushes
correctly.  This would leave bogus entries in the external
cache and result in bad code being fed to the processor
after context switches.

I don't know that much about PC hardware.  Perhaps someone
else who knows PC hardware better than I can comment.
