You could change the speed to 19k2 or even higher when your uart is a 16550.
(without actually loosing characters)
The speed the modem is 'talking' to the other modem is rather unimportant,
as long as your modem and your computer are using hardware flowcontrol.
Chris's driver can do that.
If, for some reason, your modem doesn't want to connect with higher speeds,
then your modem isn't doing its job.
