I've been using a kernel that I built with patchkit 0.2.1, Chris's latest
serial drivers for patchkit 0.2.1 (and three patches that he posted
recently), Julian's SCSI driver for the AHA1742A, and my the original
interrupt driven parallel port driver for a printer, with no problem with
the serial ports, except for the usual 'silo overflow' errors.

I've had absolutely no problem using Chris's serial drivers. I've just
followed his directions. I use kermit, too, for both dial in and dial out.
Did you encounter any errors while installing his drivers?

When you run kermit, are you sure that you are now getting the correct
special device file for his driver? He suggests the names '/dev/tty00' and
'/dev/cua00', instead of '/dev/com1' for the first port. Maybe you are
attaching to the wrong port now? I compiled with his suggested options,
etc. I followed his instructions to make the special device files and to
install his control program also. If I remember correctly, he messed up the
mknod examples. The file name should go first.

For kermit, I use 'set port /dev/tty00', and 'set speed 19200'. I've been
telling kermit to use 'rts/cts' for flow control, but I haven't verified
whether or not it works. I also mess around with the receive packet size,
block check, window, etc, but that doesn't matter.

One other point is that I'm using 'stty -f /dev/tty00 <STTY_OPTIONS>' in my
/etc/rc.local file to set up defaults for the serial lines. For instance,
I set the default baud rate to 19200 baud, 8 bit characters, via:

	stty -f /dev/tty00 19200 cs8

Does the serial line keep this setup until something else changes it? It
seems to work for me. At least, I can dial into this port at 19200 from
my modem...

So far, the only problems that I've encountered lately have been problems
when attempting to use the Stanglemeir(spelling?) interruptless lpt driver,
problems with the console driver (I'm still using the stock one), and having
some compiles die with a signal (6?) error.

The interruptless LPT driver doesn't think that my Laserjet is 'ready', but
I've had good results with the stock interrupting driver once I changed the
order of the include files and added a missing include file reference to get
it to compile and then configured it. I used the instructions and filters
from the interruptless lpt driver that I got off ref.tfs.com to figure out
how to install this one.

The console driver gets freaked out when I use the 'v' command to invoke
emacs from inside less. I type '^G', and the screen gets all twisted, and
the console driver doesn't accept input anymore. I have to log in over the
serial line to kill off the processes and get back to getty before I can
use the console again.

I haven't worried about the compiles that die too much yet. I'm running with
a 486 processor, if that matters.

   I just installed cgd's com driver (vers 2.0.1), and I can't connect
with my modem. Kermit just sorta sits there. When I hit ^C, kermit
comes back with 'interupted system call.' I have tried other methods
besides just kermit, that was the most instructive error I could get.

Can anyone help me!!!??? I have finally gotten a SLIP account, and
now I can't dial out! *argh*

   Thanks-

   Josh.
