I did one step here:
make depend

: make

: is exactly what you need to do.  it works.

Otherwise, I did exactly what you did...
ld: vers.o not found
cd ../..
make newvers
(made vers.o)
cd compile/KERNELNAME
make
(worked)

Just before doing this, I had used the patchkit patches program
to install ALL the patches.
