I am unable to load the patched kernel on my system. The old
one, however, loaded fine.

If I hard reboot I get the header message, if I soft reboot, there is
no message. In both cases the drive just spins.

I am running a 486-33 with an OPTI-495 motherboard, 128k cache,
SuperIDE caching disk controller with a Caviar 212mb, STB PowerGraph X-24
graphics accelerator.
I also have a SoundBlaster Pro, and after reading a similar
message from a person who suspected the SoundBlaster Pro was a
problem, I yanked it and it still does the same thing.

Thanks for your input,
calloway@cs.utexas.edu
