I believe you should simply try...

$ mread b:"*.*" /tmp    <--- Note the "" quotes.

I had this problem before.  It seemed you didn't have to use them
while in the installation procedure, but after that, you would
encounter the same problems you have.  Why?  I have no idea.  It does
seem a bit inconsistent to me, although in the end, the advantages of
386bsd definately outweigh the little peculiarities!
