No.  Those files do not exist in the MIT distribution.  Look again at
the xinitrc script.  IF the .Xmodmap and .Xresources file exist THEN they
are loaded.  This allows the system manager to set up global defaults.
Your problem lies elsewhere.

I'm not a 386bsd user, so I'll let someone else try to answer you.  But
the files you mention are in no way related to your problems.
