I got over this by poking the console in the end of /etc/rc.
It happened on a Olivetti SX, not with my own Taiwanese clone.
Try adding echo xyz > /dev/console in the end of rc.

You can verify this first by echoing something to console from a telnet
session.

Some time ago we had a similar problem with RS/6000's (no, I don't like em:).
stty 0 < /dev/console helped there.
