None of the chipsets currently supported by XFree86 can address more than
1MB of video memory, so resolutions higher than about 1152x900 are
not possible with the colour server. The monochrome server will support
1280x1024 providing the card has more than 512KB of video memory.

Yeah and it cost me one of the sleepless nights when you play and play
around with the new software and you simply cannot finish... :-)

Boy, that mono server is everthing I always wanted (2 years ago, now I
got quite a selection of accellerated cards...) Still it was fun.

The weakest point in my current graphics setup is the monitor: a 16"
Nanao Flexscan 9070 with 50MHz video bandwidth. Yet yesterday I
tweaked the mono Server so that it did 1280x1600 just right (from
corner to corner)! How? Well that's the wounders of XFree86
(monochrome). Actually it's (only) 1280x1024 displayed, but vertical
panning is instantanious and I do 1280x1600 virtual. Oh sure it's
interlaced (because the monitor abviously can't handle 130MHz video)
BUT IT DOESN'T LOOK AS BAD AS IT SOUNDS!! Actually an 80x40 xterm
window using Adobes 24 point bold courier looks EXCELLENT (very much
like the ATI CRYSTAL FONT courier at 1024x768) flicker is pretty much
unnoticable if you avoid single dot horizontal lines or some dither
patterns. It's far better than any other graphics setup (ok excluding
the big TIGA card) for looking at GhostScript output (180dpi just fits
on the 1280x1600 screen).

Thanks a LOT to everyone on the XFree86 team! (special thanks to
Thomas Roell, who got the whole thing going...)
