I would suggest getting Julian's new SCSI drivers.  It 'appears'
(from past articles, and my own experience) that the stock
as.c driver triggers these type of errors easily.

This is caused from the probe routine returning a totally bogus
value for the number of cylinders, which really messes with
the kernel.

I would recommend Julian's drivers whole heartedly.  They add
functionality, and are at least as good as the original driver's.
