I've had kernels making (and running) with gcc 2.3.3 for some time - I
don't know what the big problem is.  You need to put #pragmas to control
structure packing in /usr/include/machine/segments.h, but that's really
about it (that and the occasional unwisely named function name or prototype
conflict).

The kernel I'm currently running is gcc 2.3.3 compiled.
