It depends on what one works on.

When I'm doing GNU hacks or generic program technology,
I aim for free distributability; but this takes work, since
you have to make sure you aren't including licensed technology.

When I'm doing big, esoteric, paid-for work, I avoid contact
with anything other than generic scientific literature or
properly licensed technologies and aim to make the thing just
as protectable as possible.

On the one hand is my socially conscientious contribution
to the commonweal, and on the other is my job.
